COLOUR BLINDNESS

This page was last revised on 14th February 2005

Ian remembers hearing once that dogs are colour blind so, being the inquisitive, Internet-friendly kind of pet that he is, he decided to do abit of research.

And apparently it's true - in part at least. Dogs cannot recognise the colour red. I'm no help here I'm afraid because, if I can't recognise red, how can I tell that I can't!? Read this very good article on the subject:

How Dogs see the world

Ian wants to know why, if dogs can't see red, so many manufacturers make so many canine toys in.....guess which colour! The article above also explains how we compensate for our eyesight by using our greatly enhanced senses of smell and recognition and interpretation of movement. Ian wondered why, while being trained by Gemma, he was told, when recalling Gemma to repeat Gemma's name excitedly and move his arms about like a mad thing. Well now he knows: we recognise sound and movement much more than static objects. Ian also knows now why I can anticipate what is going to happen next on TV!
